1 Now in the twenty6242 and fourth702 day3117 of this month2320 the children1121 of Israel3478 were assembled622 with fasting6685, and with sackclothes8242, and earth127 upon them. 2 And the seed2233 of Israel3478 separated914 themselves from all strangers1121 5236, and stood5975 and confessed3034 their sins2403, and the iniquities5771 of their fathers1.¹ 3 And they stood up6965 in their place5977, and read7121 in the book5612 of the law8451 of the LORD3068 their God430 one fourth part7243 of the day3117; and another fourth part7243 they confessed3034, and worshipped7812 the LORD3068 their God430.

4 Then stood up6965 upon the stairs4608, of the Levites3881, Jeshua3442, and Bani1137, Kadmiel6934, Shebaniah7645, Bunni1138, Sherebiah8274, Bani1137, and Chenani3662, and cried2199 with a loud1419 voice6963 unto the LORD3068 their God430.² 5 Then the Levites3881, Jeshua3442, and Kadmiel6934, Bani1137, Hashabniah2813, Sherebiah8274, Hodijah1941, Shebaniah7645, and Pethahiah6611, said559, Stand up6965 and bless1288 the LORD3068 your God430 for ever5769 and ever5769: and blessed1288 be thy glorious3519 name8034, which is exalted7311 above all blessing1293 and praise8416. 6 Thou, even thou, art LORD3068 alone; thou hast made6213 heaven8064, the heaven8064 of heavens8064, with all their host6635, the earth776, and all things that are therein, the seas3220, and all that is therein, and thou preservest2421 them all; and the host6635 of heaven8064 worshippeth7812 thee. 7 Thou art the LORD3068 the God430, who didst choose977 Abram87, and broughtest him forth3318 out of Ur218 of the Chaldees3778, and gavest7760 him the name8034 of Abraham85; 8 And foundest4672 his heart3824 faithful539 before6440 thee, and madest3772 a covenant1285 with him to give5414 the land776 of the Canaanites3669, the Hittites2850, the Amorites567, and the Perizzites6522, and the Jebusites2983, and the Girgashites1622, to give5414 it, I say, to his seed2233, and hast performed6965 thy words1697; for thou art righteous6662: 9 And didst see7200 the affliction6040 of our fathers1 in Egypt4714, and heardest8085 their cry2201 by the Red5488 sea3220; 10 And shewedst5414 signs226 and wonders4159 upon Pharaoh6547, and on all his servants5650, and on all the people5971 of his land776: for thou knewest3045 that they dealt proudly2102 against them. 19 Yet thou in thy manifold7227 mercies7356 forsookest5800 them not in the wilderness4057: the pillar5982 of the cloud6051 departed5493 not from them by day3119, to lead5148 them in the way1870; neither the pillar5982 of fire784 by night3915, to shew them light215, and the way1870 wherein they should go3212. 20 Thou gavest5414 also thy good2896 spirit7307 to instruct7919 them, and withheldest4513 not thy manna4478 from their mouth6310, and gavest5414 them water4325 for their thirst6772. 21 Yea, forty705 years8141 didst thou sustain3557 them in the wilderness4057, so that they lacked2637 nothing; their clothes8008 waxed not old1086, and their feet7272 swelled1216 not. 22 Moreover thou gavest5414 them kingdoms4467 and nations5971, and didst divide2505 them into corners6285: so they possessed3423 the land776 of Sihon5511, and the land776 of the king4428 of Heshbon2809, and the land776 of Og5747 king4428 of Bashan1316. 23 Their children1121 also multipliedst7235 thou as the stars3556 of heaven8064, and broughtest935 them into the land776, concerning which thou hadst promised559 to their fathers1, that they should go in935 to possess3423 it. 24 So the children1121 went in935 and possessed3423 the land776, and thou subduedst3665 before6440 them the inhabitants3427 of the land776, the Canaanites3669, and gavest5414 them into their hands3027, with their kings4428, and the people5971 of the land776, that they might do6213 with them as they would7522.⁶ 25 And they took3920 strong1219 cities5892, and a fat8082 land127, and possessed3423 houses1004 full4392 of all goods2898, wells953 digged2672, vineyards3754, and oliveyards2132, and fruit3978 trees6086 in abundance7230: so they did eat398, and were filled7646, and became fat8080, and delighted5727 themselves in thy great1419 goodness2898.⁷⁸ 26 Nevertheless they were disobedient4784, and rebelled4775 against thee, and cast7993 thy law8451 behind310 their backs1458, and slew2026 thy prophets5030 which testified5749 against them to turn7725 them to thee, and they wrought6213 great1419 provocations5007. 27 Therefore thou deliveredst5414 them into the hand3027 of their enemies6862, who vexed6887 them: and in the time6256 of their trouble6869, when they cried6817 unto thee, thou heardest8085 them from heaven8064; and according to thy manifold7227 mercies7356 thou gavest5414 them saviours3467, who saved3467 them out of the hand3027 of their enemies6862. 28 But after they had rest5117, they did6213 evil7451 again7725 before6440 thee: therefore leftest5800 thou them in the hand3027 of their enemies341, so that they had the dominion7287 over them: yet when they returned7725, and cried2199 unto thee, thou heardest8085 them from heaven8064; and many7227 times6256 didst thou deliver5337 them according to thy mercies7356;⁹ 29 And testifiedst5749 against them, that thou mightest bring them again7725 unto thy law8451: yet they dealt proudly2102, and hearkened8085 not unto thy commandments4687, but sinned2398 against thy judgments4941, (which if a man120 do6213, he shall live2421 in them;) and withdrew5414 5637 the shoulder3802, and hardened7185 their neck6203, and would not hear8085.¹⁰ 30 Yet many7227 years8141 didst thou forbear4900 them, and testifiedst5749 against them by thy spirit7307 in3027 thy prophets5030: yet would they not give ear238: therefore gavest5414 thou them into the hand3027 of the people5971 of the lands776.¹¹¹² 31 Nevertheless for thy great7227 mercies'7356 sake thou didst6213 not utterly consume3617 them, nor forsake5800 them; for thou art a gracious2587 and merciful7349 God410. 32 Now therefore, our God430, the great1419, the mighty1368, and the terrible3372 God410, who keepest8104 covenant1285 and mercy2617, let not all the trouble8513 seem little4591 before6440 thee, that hath come4672 upon us, on our kings4428, on our princes8269, and on our priests3548, and on our prophets5030, and on our fathers1, and on all thy people5971, since the time3117 of the kings4428 of Assyria804 unto this day3117.¹³¹⁴ 33 Howbeit thou art just6662 in all that is brought935 upon us; for thou hast done6213 right571, but we have done wickedly7561: 34 Neither have our kings4428, our princes8269, our priests3548, nor our fathers1, kept6213 thy law8451, nor hearkened7181 unto thy commandments4687 and thy testimonies5715, wherewith thou didst testify5749 against them. 35 For they have not served5647 thee in their kingdom4438, and in thy great7227 goodness2898 that thou gavest5414 them, and in the large7342 and fat8082 land776 which thou gavest5414 before6440 them, neither turned7725 they from their wicked7451 works4611. 36 Behold, we are servants5650 this day3117, and for the land776 that thou gavest5414 unto our fathers1 to eat398 the fruit6529 thereof and the good2898 thereof, behold, we are servants5650 in it: 37 And it yieldeth much7235 increase8393 unto the kings4428 whom thou hast set5414 over us because of our sins2403: also they have dominion4910 over our bodies1472, and over our cattle929, at their pleasure7522, and we are in great1419 distress6869. 38 And because of all this we make3772 a sure548 covenant, and write3789 it; and our princes8269, Levites3881, and priests3548, seal2856 unto it.¹⁵
