1 And the men376 of Ephraim669 gathered themselves together6817, and went5674 northward6828, and said559 unto Jephthah3316, Wherefore passedst thou over5674 to fight3898 against the children1121 of Ammon5983, and didst not call7121 us to go3212 with thee? we will burn8313 thine house1004 upon thee with fire784.¹ 2 And Jephthah3316 said559 unto them, I and my people5971 were1961 at great3966 strife376 7379 with the children1121 of Ammon5983; and when I called2199 you, ye delivered3467 me not out of their hands3027. 3 And when I saw7200 that ye delivered3467 me not, I put7760 my life5315 in my hands3709, and passed over5674 against the children1121 of Ammon5983, and the LORD3068 delivered5414 them into my hand3027: wherefore then are ye come up5927 unto me this day3117, to fight3898 against me? 4 Then Jephthah3316 gathered together6908 all the men582 of Gilead1568, and fought3898 with Ephraim669: and the men582 of Gilead1568 smote5221 Ephraim669, because they said559, Ye Gileadites1568 are fugitives6412 of Ephraim669 among8432 the Ephraimites669, and among8432 the Manassites4519. 5 And the Gileadites1568 took3920 the passages4569 of Jordan3383 before the Ephraimites669: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites669 which were escaped6412 said559, Let me go over5674; that the men582 of Gilead1568 said559 unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite673? If he said559, Nay; 6 Then said559 they unto him, Say559 now Shibboleth7641: and he said559 Sibboleth5451: for he could not frame3559 to pronounce1696 it right3559.
