1 But the children1121 of Israel3478 committed4603 a trespass4604 in the accursed thing2764: for Achan5912, the son1121 of Carmi3756, the son1121 of Zabdi2067, the son1121 of Zerah2226, of the tribe4294 of Judah3063, took3947 of the accursed thing2764: and the anger639 of the LORD3068 was kindled2734 against the children1121 of Israel3478. 2 And Joshua3091 sent7971 men582 from Jericho3405 to Ai5857, which is beside5973 Bethaven1007, on the east side6924 of Bethel1008, and spake559 unto them, saying559, Go up5927 and view7270 the country776. And the men582 went up5927 and viewed7270 Ai5857. 3 And they returned7725 to Joshua3091, and said559 unto him, Let not all the people5971 go up5927; but let about two or three7969 thousand505 men376 go up5927 and smite5221 Ai5857; and make not all the people5971 to labour3021 thither; for they are but few4592.¹ 4 So there went up5927 thither of the people5971 about three7969 thousand505 men376: and they fled5127 before6440 the men582 of Ai5857. 5 And the men582 of Ai5857 smote5221 of them about thirty7970 and six8337 men376: for they chased7291 them from before6440 the gate8179 even unto Shebarim7671, and smote5221 them in the going down4174: wherefore the hearts3824 of the people5971 melted4549, and became as water4325.²

6 And Joshua3091 rent7167 his clothes8071, and fell5307 to the earth776 upon his face6440 before6440 the ark727 of the LORD3068 until the eventide6153, he and the elders2205 of Israel3478, and put5927 dust6083 upon their heads7218. 7 And Joshua3091 said559, Alas, O162 Lord136 GOD3069, wherefore hast thou at all5674 brought5674 this people5971 over5674 Jordan3383, to deliver5414 us into the hand3027 of the Amorites567, to destroy6 us? would to God3863 we had been content2974, and dwelt3427 on the other side5676 Jordan3383! 8 O994 Lord136, what shall I say559, when310 Israel3478 turneth2015 their backs6203 before6440 their enemies341!³ 9 For the Canaanites3669 and all the inhabitants3427 of the land776 shall hear8085 of it, and shall environ us round5437, and cut off3772 our name8034 from the earth776: and what wilt thou do6213 unto thy great1419 name8034?

10 And the LORD3068 said559 unto Joshua3091, Get thee up6965; wherefore liest5307 thou thus upon thy face6440?⁴ 11 Israel3478 hath sinned2398, and they have also transgressed5674 my covenant1285 which I commanded6680 them: for they have even taken3947 of the accursed thing2764, and have also stolen1589, and dissembled3584 also, and they have put7760 it even among their own stuff3627. 12 Therefore the children1121 of Israel3478 could3201 not stand6965 before6440 their enemies341, but turned6437 their backs6203 before6440 their enemies341, because they were accursed2764: neither will I be with you any more3254, except3808 ye destroy8045 the accursed2764 from among7130 you. 13 Up6965, sanctify6942 the people5971, and say559, Sanctify6942 yourselves against to morrow4279: for thus saith559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478, There is an accursed thing2764 in the midst7130 of thee, O Israel3478: thou canst3201 not stand6965 before6440 thine enemies341, until ye take away5493 the accursed thing2764 from among7130 you. 14 In the morning1242 therefore ye shall be brought7126 according to your tribes7626: and it shall be, that the tribe7626 which the LORD3068 taketh3920 shall come7126 according to the families4940 thereof; and the family4940 which the LORD3068 shall take3920 shall come7126 by households1004; and the household1004 which the LORD3068 shall take3920 shall come7126 man1397 by man1397. 15 And it shall be, that he that is taken3920 with the accursed thing2764 shall be burnt8313 with fire784, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed5674 the covenant1285 of the LORD3068, and because he hath wrought6213 folly5039 in Israel3478.⁵

16 So Joshua3091 rose up early7925 in the morning1242, and brought7126 Israel3478 by their tribes7626; and the tribe7626 of Judah3063 was taken3920: 17 And he brought7126 the family4940 of Judah3063; and he took3920 the family4940 of the Zarhites2227: and he brought7126 the family4940 of the Zarhites2227 man1397 by man1397; and Zabdi2067 was taken3920: 18 And he brought7126 his household1004 man1397 by man1397; and Achan5912, the son1121 of Carmi3756, the son1121 of Zabdi2067, the son1121 of Zerah2226, of the tribe4294 of Judah3063, was taken3920. 19 And Joshua3091 said559 unto Achan5912, My son1121, give7760, I pray thee, glory3519 to the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478, and make5414 confession8426 unto him; and tell5046 me now what thou hast done6213; hide3582 it not from me. 20 And Achan5912 answered6030 Joshua3091, and said559, Indeed546 I have sinned2398 against the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478, and thus and thus have I done6213: 21 When I saw7200 among the spoils7998 a259 goodly2896 Babylonish8152 garment155, and two hundred3967 shekels8255 of silver3701, and a259 wedge3956 of gold2091 of fifty2572 shekels8255 weight4948, then I coveted2530 them, and took3947 them; and, behold, they are hid2934 in the earth776 in the midst8432 of my tent168, and the silver3701 under it.⁶ 22 So Joshua3091 sent7971 messengers4397, and they ran7323 unto the tent168; and, behold, it was hid2934 in his tent168, and the silver3701 under it. 23 And they took3947 them out of the midst8432 of the tent168, and brought935 them unto Joshua3091, and unto all the children1121 of Israel3478, and laid them out3332 before6440 the LORD3068.⁷ 24 And Joshua3091, and all Israel3478 with him, took3947 Achan5912 the son1121 of Zerah2226, and the silver3701, and the garment155, and the wedge3956 of gold2091, and his sons1121, and his daughters1323, and his oxen7794, and his asses2543, and his sheep6629, and his tent168, and all that he had: and they brought5927 them unto the valley6010 of Achor5911. 25 And Joshua3091 said559, Why4100 hast thou troubled5916 us? the LORD3068 shall trouble5916 thee this day3117. And all Israel3478 stoned7275 him with stones68, and burned8313 them with fire784, after they had stoned5619 them with stones68. 26 And they raised6965 over him a great1419 heap1530 of stones68 unto this day3117. So the LORD3068 turned7725 from the fierceness2740 of his anger639. Wherefore the name8034 of that place4725 was called7121, The valley6010 of Achor5911, unto this day3117.⁸
