1 And it came to pass, when all the people1471 were clean8552 passed over5674 Jordan3383, that the LORD3068 spake559 unto Joshua3091, saying559, 2 Take3947 you twelve8147 6240 men582 out of the people5971, out of every259 tribe7626 a man376, 3 And command6680 ye them, saying559, Take5375 you hence out of the midst8432 of Jordan3383, out of the place where the priests'3548 feet7272 stood4673 firm3559, twelve8147 6240 stones68, and ye shall carry them over5674 with you, and leave3240 them in the lodging place4411, where ye shall lodge3885 this night3915. 4 Then Joshua3091 called7121 the twelve8147 6240 men376, whom he had prepared3559 of the children1121 of Israel3478, out of every259 tribe7626 a man376: 5 And Joshua3091 said559 unto them, Pass over5674 before6440 the ark727 of the LORD3068 your God430 into the midst8432 of Jordan3383, and take ye up7311 every259 man376 of you a stone68 upon his shoulder7926, according unto the number4557 of the tribes7626 of the children1121 of Israel3478: 6 That this may be a sign226 among7130 you, that when your children1121 ask7592 their fathers in time to come4279, saying559, What mean ye by these stones68?¹ 7 Then ye shall answer559 them, That the waters4325 of Jordan3383 were cut off3772 before6440 the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD3068; when it passed over5674 Jordan3383, the waters4325 of Jordan3383 were cut off3772: and these stones68 shall be for a memorial2146 unto the children1121 of Israel3478 for5704 ever5769. 8 And the children1121 of Israel3478 did6213 so as Joshua3091 commanded6680, and took up5375 twelve8147 6240 stones68 out of the midst8432 of Jordan3383, as the LORD3068 spake1696 unto Joshua3091, according to the number4557 of the tribes7626 of the children1121 of Israel3478, and carried them over5674 with them unto the place where they lodged4411, and laid them down3240 there. 9 And Joshua3091 set up6965 twelve8147 6240 stones68 in the midst8432 of Jordan3383, in the place where the feet7272 of the priests3548 which bare5375 the ark727 of the covenant1285 stood4673: and they are there unto this day3117.

10 For the priests3548 which bare5375 the ark727 stood5975 in the midst8432 of Jordan3383, until every thing1697 was finished8552 that the LORD3068 commanded6680 Joshua3091 to speak1696 unto the people5971, according to all that Moses4872 commanded6680 Joshua3091: and the people5971 hasted4116 and passed over5674. 11 And it came to pass, when all the people5971 were clean8552 passed over5674, that the ark727 of the LORD3068 passed over5674, and the priests3548, in the presence6440 of the people5971. 12 And the children1121 of Reuben7205, and the children1121 of Gad1410, and half2677 the tribe7626 of Manasseh4519, passed over5674 armed2571 before6440 the children1121 of Israel3478, as Moses4872 spake1696 unto them: 13 About forty705 thousand505 prepared2502 for war6635 passed over5674 before6440 the LORD3068 unto battle4421, to the plains6160 of Jericho3405.² 14 On that day3117 the LORD3068 magnified1431 Joshua3091 in the sight5869 of all Israel3478; and they feared3372 him, as they feared3372 Moses4872, all the days3117 of his life2416. 15 And the LORD3068 spake559 unto Joshua3091, saying559, 16 Command6680 the priests3548 that bear5375 the ark727 of the testimony5715, that they come up5927 out of Jordan3383. 17 Joshua3091 therefore commanded6680 the priests3548, saying559, Come ye up5927 out of Jordan3383. 18 And it came to pass, when the priests3548 that bare5375 the ark727 of the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 were come up5927 out of the midst8432 of Jordan3383, and the soles3709 of the priests'3548 feet7272 were lifted up5423 unto the dry land2724, that the waters4325 of Jordan3383 returned7725 unto their place4725, and flowed3212 over all his banks1415, as8543 they did before8032.³⁴ 19 And the people5971 came up5927 out of Jordan3383 on the tenth6218 day of the first7223 month2320, and encamped2583 in Gilgal1537, in the east4217 border7097 of Jericho3405.

20 And those twelve8147 6240 stones68, which they took out3947 of Jordan3383, did Joshua3091 pitch6965 in Gilgal1537. 21 And he spake559 unto the children1121 of Israel3478, saying559, When your children1121 shall ask7592 their fathers1 in time to come4279, saying559, What mean these stones68?⁵ 22 Then ye shall let your children1121 know3045, saying559, Israel3478 came over5674 this Jordan3383 on dry land3004. 23 For the LORD3068 your God430 dried up3001 the waters4325 of Jordan3383 from before6440 you, until ye were passed over5674, as the LORD3068 your God430 did6213 to the Red5488 sea3220, which he dried up3001 from before6440 us, until we were gone over5674: 24 That all the people5971 of the earth776 might know3045 the hand3027 of the LORD3068, that it is mighty2389: that ye might fear3372 the LORD3068 your God430 for ever3117.⁶
