1 Surely3426 there is a vein4161 for the silver3701, and a place4725 for gold2091 where they fine2212 it.¹ 2 Iron1270 is taken3947 out of the earth6083, and brass5154 is molten6694 out of the stone68.² 3 He setteth7760 an end7093 to darkness2822, and searcheth out2713 all perfection8503: the stones68 of darkness652, and the shadow of death6757. 4 The flood5158 breaketh out6555 from the inhabitant1481; even the waters forgotten7911 of the foot7272: they are dried up1809, they are gone away5128 from men582. 5 As for the earth776, out of it cometh3318 bread3899: and under it is turned up2015 as it were fire784. 6 The stones68 of it are the place4725 of sapphires5601: and it hath dust6083 of gold2091.³ 7 There is a path5410 which no fowl5861 knoweth3045, and which the vulture's344 eye5869 hath not seen7805: 8 The lion's7830 whelps1121 have not trodden1869 it, nor the fierce lion7826 passed5710 by it. 9 He putteth forth7971 his hand3027 upon the rock2496; he overturneth2015 the mountains2022 by the roots8328.⁴ 10 He cutteth out1234 rivers2975 among the rocks6697; and his eye5869 seeth7200 every precious thing3366. 11 He bindeth2280 the floods5104 from overflowing1065; and the thing that is hid8587 bringeth he forth3318 to light216.⁵ 12 But where370 shall wisdom2451 be found4672? and where is the place4725 of understanding998? 13 Man582 knoweth3045 not the price6187 thereof; neither is it found4672 in the land776 of the living2416.

14 The depth8415 saith559, It is not in me: and the sea3220 saith559, It is not with me. 15 It cannot be gotten5414 for gold5458, neither shall silver3701 be weighed8254 for the price4242 thereof.⁶ 16 It cannot be valued5541 with the gold3800 of Ophir211, with the precious3368 onyx7718, or the sapphire5601. 17 The gold2091 and the crystal2137 cannot equal6186 it: and the exchange8545 of it shall not be for jewels3627 of fine gold6337.⁷ 18 No mention2142 shall be made of coral7215, or of pearls1378: for the price4901 of wisdom2451 is above rubies6443.⁸ 19 The topaz6357 of Ethiopia3568 shall not equal6186 it, neither shall it be valued5541 with pure2889 gold3800.

20 Whence370 then cometh935 wisdom2451? and where is the place4725 of understanding998? 21 Seeing it is hid5956 from the eyes5869 of all living2416, and kept close5641 from the fowls5775 of the air8064.⁹ 22 Destruction11 and death4194 say559, We have heard8085 the fame8088 thereof with our ears241. 23 God430 understandeth995 the way1870 thereof, and he knoweth3045 the place4725 thereof. 24 For he looketh5027 to the ends7098 of the earth776, and seeth7200 under the whole heaven8064; 25 To make6213 the weight4948 for the winds7307; and he weigheth8505 the waters4325 by measure4060. 26 When he made6213 a decree2706 for the rain4306, and a way1870 for the lightning2385 of the thunder6963: 27 Then did he see7200 it, and declare5608 it; he prepared3559 it, yea, and searched it out2713.¹⁰ 28 And unto man120 he said559, Behold, the fear3374 of the Lord136, that is wisdom2451; and to depart5493 from evil7451 is understanding998.
