1 And it came to pass in the fourth7243 year8141 of Jehoiakim3079 the son1121 of Josiah2977 king4428 of Judah3063, that this word1697 came unto Jeremiah3414 from the LORD3068, saying559, 2 Take3947 thee a roll4039 of a book5612, and write3789 therein all the words1697 that I have spoken1696 unto thee against Israel3478, and against Judah3063, and against all the nations1471, from the day3117 I spake1696 unto thee, from the days3117 of Josiah2977, even unto this day3117. 3 It may be that the house1004 of Judah3063 will hear8085 all the evil7451 which I purpose2803 to do6213 unto them; that they may return7725 every man376 from his evil7451 way1870; that I may forgive5545 their iniquity5771 and their sin2403. 4 Then Jeremiah3414 called7121 Baruch1263 the son1121 of Neriah5374: and Baruch1263 wrote3789 from the mouth6310 of Jeremiah3414 all the words1697 of the LORD3068, which he had spoken1696 unto him, upon a roll4039 of a book5612. 5 And Jeremiah3414 commanded6680 Baruch1263, saying559, I am shut up6113; I cannot3201 go935 into the house1004 of the LORD3068: 6 Therefore go935 thou, and read7121 in the roll4039, which thou hast written3789 from my mouth6310, the words1697 of the LORD3068 in the ears241 of the people5971 in the LORD'S3068 house1004 upon the fasting6685 day3117: and also thou shalt read7121 them in the ears241 of all Judah3063 that come out935 of their cities5892. 7 It may be they will present5307 their supplication8467 before6440 the LORD3068, and will return7725 every one376 from his evil7451 way1870: for great1419 is the anger639 and the fury2534 that the LORD3068 hath pronounced1696 against this people5971.¹ 8 And Baruch1263 the son1121 of Neriah5374 did6213 according to all that Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030 commanded6680 him, reading7121 in the book5612 the words1697 of the LORD3068 in the LORD'S3068 house1004.

9 And it came to pass in the fifth2549 year8141 of Jehoiakim3079 the son1121 of Josiah2977 king4428 of Judah3063, in the ninth8671 month2320, that they proclaimed7121 a fast6685 before6440 the LORD3068 to all the people5971 in Jerusalem3389, and to all the people5971 that came935 from the cities5892 of Judah3063 unto Jerusalem3389. 10 Then read7121 Baruch1263 in the book5612 the words1697 of Jeremiah3414 in the house1004 of the LORD3068, in the chamber3957 of Gemariah1587 the son1121 of Shaphan8227 the scribe5608, in the higher5945 court2691, at the entry6607 of the new2319 gate8179 of the LORD'S3068 house1004, in the ears241 of all the people5971.² 11 When Michaiah4321 the son1121 of Gemariah1587, the son1121 of Shaphan8227, had heard8085 out of the book5612 all the words1697 of the LORD3068, 12 Then he went down3381 into the king's4428 house1004, into the scribe's5608 chamber3957: and, lo, all the princes8269 sat3427 there, even Elishama476 the scribe5608, and Delaiah1806 the son1121 of Shemaiah8098, and Elnathan494 the son1121 of Achbor5907, and Gemariah1587 the son1121 of Shaphan8227, and Zedekiah6667 the son1121 of Hananiah2608, and all the princes8269. 13 Then Michaiah4321 declared5046 unto them all the words1697 that he had heard8085, when Baruch1263 read7121 the book5612 in the ears241 of the people5971. 14 Therefore all the princes8269 sent7971 Jehudi3065 the son1121 of Nethaniah5418, the son1121 of Shelemiah8018, the son1121 of Cushi3570, unto Baruch1263, saying559, Take3947 in thine hand3027 the roll4039 wherein thou hast read7121 in the ears241 of the people5971, and come3212. So Baruch1263 the son1121 of Neriah5374 took3947 the roll4039 in his hand3027, and came935 unto them. 15 And they said559 unto him, Sit down3427 now, and read7121 it in our ears241. So Baruch1263 read7121 it in their ears241. 16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard8085 all the words1697, they were afraid6342 both413 one376 and other7453, and said559 unto Baruch1263, We will surely5046 tell5046 the king4428 of all these words1697. 17 And they asked7592 Baruch1263, saying559, Tell5046 us now, How didst thou write3789 all these words1697 at his mouth6310? 18 Then Baruch1263 answered559 them, He pronounced7121 all these words1697 unto me with his mouth6310, and I wrote3789 them with ink1773 in the book5612. 19 Then said559 the princes8269 unto Baruch1263, Go3212, hide5641 thee, thou and Jeremiah3414; and let no man376 know3045 where375 ye be.

20 And they went in935 to the king4428 into the court2691, but they laid up6485 the roll4039 in the chamber3957 of Elishama476 the scribe5608, and told5046 all the words1697 in the ears241 of the king4428. 21 So the king4428 sent7971 Jehudi3065 to fetch3947 the roll4039: and he took3947 it out of Elishama476 the scribe's5608 chamber3957. And Jehudi3065 read7121 it in the ears241 of the king4428, and in the ears241 of all the princes8269 which stood5975 beside5921 the king4428. 22 Now the king4428 sat3427 in the winterhouse1004 2779 in the ninth8671 month2320: and there was a fire on the hearth254 burning1197 before6440 him. 23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi3065 had read7121 three7969 or four702 leaves1817, he cut7167 it with the penknife8593 5608, and cast7993 it into the fire784 that was on the hearth254, until all the roll4039 was consumed8552 in the fire784 that was on the hearth254. 24 Yet they were not afraid6342, nor rent7167 their garments899, neither the king4428, nor any of his servants5650 that heard8085 all these words1697. 25 Nevertheless Elnathan494 and Delaiah1806 and Gemariah1587 had made intercession6293 to the king4428 that he would not burn8313 the roll4039: but he would not hear8085 them. 26 But the king4428 commanded6680 Jerahmeel3396 the son1121 of Hammelech4429, and Seraiah8304 the son1121 of Azriel5837, and Shelemiah8018 the son1121 of Abdeel5655, to take3947 Baruch1263 the scribe5608 and Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030: but the LORD3068 hid5641 them.³ 27 Then the word1697 of the LORD3068 came to Jeremiah3414, after310 that the king4428 had burned8313 the roll4039, and the words1697 which Baruch1263 wrote3789 at the mouth6310 of Jeremiah3414, saying559, 28 Take3947 thee again7725 another312 roll4039, and write3789 in it all the former7223 words1697 that were in the first7223 roll4039, which Jehoiakim3079 the king4428 of Judah3063 hath burned8313. 29 And thou shalt say559 to Jehoiakim3079 king4428 of Judah3063, Thus saith559 the LORD3068; Thou hast burned8313 this roll4039, saying559, Why hast thou written3789 therein, saying559, The king4428 of Babylon894 shall certainly935 come935 and destroy7843 this land776, and shall cause to cease7673 from thence man120 and beast929? 30 Therefore thus saith559 the LORD3068 of Jehoiakim3079 king4428 of Judah3063; He shall have none to sit3427 upon the throne3678 of David1732: and his dead body5038 shall be cast out7993 in the day3117 to the heat2721, and in the night3915 to the frost7140. 31 And I will punish6485 him and his seed2233 and his servants5650 for their iniquity5771; and I will bring935 upon them, and upon the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389, and upon the men376 of Judah3063, all the evil7451 that I have pronounced1696 against them; but they hearkened8085 not.⁴ 32 Then took3947 Jeremiah3414 another312 roll4039, and gave5414 it to Baruch1263 the scribe5608, the son1121 of Neriah5374; who wrote3789 therein from the mouth6310 of Jeremiah3414 all the words1697 of the book5612 which Jehoiakim3079 king4428 of Judah3063 had burned8313 in the fire784: and there were added3254 besides unto them many7227 like1992 words1697.⁵
