1 Now these are the words1697 of the letter5612 that Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030 sent7971 from Jerusalem3389 unto the residue3499 of the elders2205 which were carried away captives1473, and to the priests3548, and to the prophets5030, and to all the people5971 whom Nebuchadnezzar5019 had carried away captive1540 from Jerusalem3389 to Babylon894; 2 (After310 that Jeconiah3204 the king4428, and the queen1377, and the eunuchs5631, the princes8269 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem3389, and the carpenters2796, and the smiths4525, were departed3318 from Jerusalem3389;)¹ 3 By the hand3027 of Elasah501 the son1121 of Shaphan8227, and Gemariah1587 the son1121 of Hilkiah2518, (whom Zedekiah6667 king4428 of Judah3063 sent7971 unto Babylon894 to Nebuchadnezzar5019 king4428 of Babylon894) saying559, 4 Thus saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts6635, the God430 of Israel3478, unto all that are carried away captives1473, whom I have caused to be carried away1540 from Jerusalem3389 unto Babylon894; 5 Build1129 ye houses1004, and dwell3427 in them; and plant5193 gardens1593, and eat398 the fruit6529 of them; 6 Take3947 ye wives802, and beget3205 sons1121 and daughters1323; and take3947 wives802 for your sons1121, and give5414 your daughters1323 to husbands582, that they may bear3205 sons1121 and daughters1121; that ye may be increased7235 there, and not diminished4591. 7 And seek1875 the peace7965 of the city5892 whither I have caused you to be carried away captives1540, and pray6419 unto the LORD3068 for it: for in the peace7965 thereof shall ye have peace7965.

8 For thus saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts6635, the God430 of Israel3478; Let not your prophets5030 and your diviners7080, that be in the midst7130 of you, deceive5377 you, neither hearken8085 to your dreams2472 which ye cause to be dreamed2492. 9 For they prophesy5012 falsely8267 unto you in my name8034: I have not sent7971 them, saith5002 the LORD3068.² 10 For thus saith559 the LORD3068, That after6310 seventy7657 years8141 be accomplished4390 at Babylon894 I will visit6485 you, and perform6965 my good2896 word1697 toward you, in causing you to return7725 to this place4725. 11 For I know3045 the thoughts4284 that I think2803 toward you, saith5002 the LORD3068, thoughts4284 of peace7965, and not of evil7451, to give5414 you an expected8615 end319.³ 12 Then shall ye call7121 upon me, and ye shall go1980 and pray6419 unto me, and I will hearken8085 unto you. 13 And ye shall seek1245 me, and find4672 me, when ye shall search1875 for me with all your heart3824. 14 And I will be found4672 of you, saith5002 the LORD3068: and I will turn away7725 your captivity7622 7622, and I will gather6908 you from all the nations1471, and from all the places4725 whither I have driven5080 you, saith5002 the LORD3068; and I will bring you again7725 into the place4725 whence I caused you to be carried away captive1540.

15 Because ye have said559, The LORD3068 hath raised us up6965 prophets5030 in Babylon894; 16 Know that thus saith559 the LORD3068 of the king4428 that sitteth3427 upon the throne3678 of David1732, and of all the people5971 that dwelleth3427 in this city5892, and of your brethren251 that are not gone forth3318 with you into captivity1473; 17 Thus saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts6635; Behold, I will send7971 upon them the sword2719, the famine7458, and the pestilence1698, and will make5414 them like vile8182 figs8384, that cannot be eaten398, they are so evil7455. 18 And I will persecute7291 them310 with the sword2719, with the famine7458, and with the pestilence1698, and will deliver5414 them to be removed2189 2113 to all the kingdoms4467 of the earth776, to be a curse423, and an astonishment8047, and an hissing8322, and a reproach2781, among all the nations1471 whither I have driven5080 them:⁴ 19 Because they have not hearkened8085 to my words1697, saith5002 the LORD3068, which I sent7971 unto them by my servants5650 the prophets5030, rising up early7925 and sending7971 them; but ye would not hear8085, saith5002 the LORD3068. 20 Hear8085 ye therefore the word1697 of the LORD3068, all ye of the captivity1473, whom I have sent7971 from Jerusalem3389 to Babylon894: 21 Thus saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts6635, the God430 of Israel3478, of Ahab256 the son1121 of Kolaiah6964, and of Zedekiah6667 the son1121 of Maaseiah4641, which prophesy5012 a lie8267 unto you in my name8034; Behold, I will deliver5414 them into the hand3027 of Nebuchadrezzar5019 king4428 of Babylon894; and he shall slay5221 them before your eyes5869; 22 And of them shall be taken up3947 a curse7045 by all the captivity1546 of Judah3063 which are in Babylon894, saying559, The LORD3068 make7760 thee like Zedekiah6667 and like Ahab256, whom the king4428 of Babylon894 roasted7033 in the fire784; 23 Because they have committed6213 villany5039 in Israel3478, and have committed6213 adultery5003 with their neighbours'7453 wives802, and have spoken1696 lying8267 words1697 in my name8034, which I have not commanded6680 them; even I know3045, and am a witness5707, saith5002 the LORD3068.

24 Thus shalt thou also speak559 to Shemaiah8098 the Nehelamite5161, saying559,⁵ 25 Thus speaketh559 the LORD3068 of hosts6635, the God430 of Israel3478, saying559, Because thou hast sent7971 letters5612 in thy name8034 unto all the people5971 that are at Jerusalem3389, and to Zephaniah6846 the son1121 of Maaseiah4641 the priest3548, and to all the priests3548, saying559, 26 The LORD3068 hath made5414 thee priest3548 in the stead of Jehoiada3077 the priest3548, that ye should be officers6496 in the house1004 of the LORD3068, for every man376 that is mad7696, and maketh himself a prophet5012, that thou shouldest put5414 him in prison4115, and in the stocks6729. 27 Now therefore why hast thou not reproved1605 Jeremiah3414 of Anathoth6069, which maketh himself a prophet5012 to you? 28 For therefore he sent7971 unto us in Babylon894, saying559, This1931 captivity is long752: build1129 ye houses1004, and dwell3427 in them; and plant5193 gardens1593, and eat398 the fruit6529 of them. 29 And Zephaniah6846 the priest3548 read7121 this letter5612 in the ears241 of Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030. 30 Then came the word1697 of the LORD3068 unto Jeremiah3414, saying559, 31 Send7971 to all them of the captivity1473, saying559, Thus saith559 the LORD3068 concerning Shemaiah8098 the Nehelamite5161; Because that Shemaiah8098 hath prophesied5012 unto you, and I sent7971 him not, and he caused you to trust982 in a lie8267: 32 Therefore thus saith559 the LORD3068; Behold, I will punish6485 Shemaiah8098 the Nehelamite5161, and his seed2233: he shall not have a man376 to dwell3427 among8432 this people5971; neither shall he behold7200 the good2896 that I will do6213 for my people5971, saith5002 the LORD3068; because he hath taught1696 rebellion5627 against the LORD3068.⁶
