1 And when the seventh7637 month2320 was come5060, and the children1121 of Israel3478 were in the cities5892, the people5971 gathered themselves together622 as one259 man376 to Jerusalem3389. 2 Then stood up6965 Jeshua3442 the son1121 of Jozadak3136, and his brethren251 the priests3548, and Zerubbabel2216 the son1121 of Shealtiel7597, and his brethren251, and builded1129 the altar4196 of the God430 of Israel3478, to offer5927 burnt offerings5930 thereon, as it is written3789 in the law8451 of Moses4872 the man376 of God430.¹²³ 3 And they set3559 the altar4196 upon his bases4350; for fear367 was upon them because of the people5971 of those countries776: and they offered5927 burnt offerings5930 thereon unto the LORD3068, even burnt offerings5930 morning1242 and evening6153. 4 They kept6213 also the feast2282 of tabernacles5521, as it is written3789, and offered the daily3117 3117 burnt offerings5930 by number4557, according to the custom4941, as the duty1697 of every day3117 required3117;⁴ 5 And afterward310 offered the continual8548 burnt offering5930, both of the new moons2320, and of all the set feasts4150 of the LORD3068 that were consecrated6942, and of every one that willingly offered5068 a freewill offering5071 unto the LORD3068. 6 From the first259 day3117 of the seventh7637 month2320 began2490 they to offer5927 burnt offerings5930 unto the LORD3068. But the foundation3245 of the temple1964 of the LORD3068 was not yet laid3245.⁵ 7 They gave5414 money3701 also unto the masons2672, and to the carpenters2796; and meat3978, and drink4960, and oil8081, unto them of Zidon6722, and to them of Tyre6876, to bring935 cedar730 trees6086 from Lebanon3844 to the sea3220 of Joppa3305, according to the grant7558 that they had of Cyrus3566 king4428 of Persia6539.⁶

8 Now in the second8145 year8141 of their coming935 unto the house1004 of God430 at Jerusalem3389, in the second8145 month2320, began2490 Zerubbabel2216 the son1121 of Shealtiel7597, and Jeshua3442 the son1121 of Jozadak3136, and the remnant7605 of their brethren251 the priests3548 and the Levites3881, and all they that were come out935 of the captivity7628 unto Jerusalem3389; and appointed5975 the Levites3881, from twenty6242 years8141 old1121 and upward4605, to set forward5329 the work4399 of the house1004 of the LORD3068. 9 Then stood5975 Jeshua3442 with his sons1121 and his brethren251, Kadmiel6934 and his sons1121, the sons1121 of Judah3063, together259, to set forward5329 the workmen6213 4399 in the house1004 of God430: the sons1121 of Henadad2582, with their sons1121 and their brethren251 the Levites3881.⁷⁸ 10 And when the builders1129 laid the foundation3245 of the temple1964 of the LORD3068, they set5975 the priests3548 in their apparel3847 with trumpets2689, and the Levites3881 the sons1121 of Asaph623 with cymbals4700, to praise1984 the LORD3068, after the ordinance3027 of David1732 king4428 of Israel3478. 11 And they sang together by course6030 in praising1984 and giving thanks3034 unto the LORD3068; because he is good2896, for his mercy2617 endureth for ever5769 toward Israel3478. And all the people5971 shouted7321 with a great1419 shout8643, when they praised1984 the LORD3068, because the foundation3245 of the house1004 of the LORD3068 was laid3245. 12 But many7227 of the priests3548 and Levites3881 and chief7218 of the fathers1, who were ancient men2205, that had seen7200 the first7223 house1004, when the foundation3245 of this house1004 was laid3245 before their eyes5869, wept1058 with a loud1419 voice6963; and many7227 shouted8643 aloud7311 for joy8057: 13 So that the people5971 could not discern5234 the noise6963 of the shout8643 of joy8057 from the noise6963 of the weeping1065 of the people5971: for the people5971 shouted7321 with a loud1419 shout8643, and the noise6963 was heard8085 afar off7350.
