1 Now these are the names8034 of the children1121 of Israel3478, which came935 into Egypt4714; every man376 and his household1004 came935 with Jacob3290. 2 Reuben7205, Simeon8095, Levi3878, and Judah3063, 3 Issachar3485, Zebulun2074, and Benjamin1144, 4 Dan1835, and Naphtali5321, Gad1410, and Asher836. 5 And all the souls5315 that came out3318 of the loins3409 of Jacob3290 were seventy7657 souls5315: for Joseph3130 was in Egypt4714 already.¹ 6 And Joseph3130 died4191, and all his brethren251, and all that generation1755. 7 And the children1121 of Israel3478 were fruitful6509, and increased abundantly8317, and multiplied7235, and waxed exceeding3966 3966 mighty6105; and the land776 was filled4390 with them.

8 Now there arose up6965 a new2319 king4428 over Egypt4714, which knew3045 not Joseph3130. 9 And he said559 unto his people5971, Behold, the people5971 of the children1121 of Israel3478 are more7227 and mightier6099 than we: 10 Come on3051, let us deal wisely2449 with them; lest they multiply7235, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out7122 any war4421, they1931 join3254 also unto our enemies8130, and fight3898 against us, and so get them up5927 out of the land776. 11 Therefore they did set7760 over them taskmasters4522 8269 to afflict6031 them with their burdens5450. 15 And the king4428 of Egypt4714 spake559 to the Hebrew5680 midwives3205, of which the name8034 of the one259 was Shiphrah8236, and the name8034 of the other8145 Puah6326: 16 And he said559, When ye do the office of a midwife3205 to the Hebrew women5680, and see7200 them upon the stools70; if it be a son1121, then ye shall kill4191 him: but if it be a daughter1323, then she shall live2425. 17 But the midwives3205 feared3372 God430, and did6213 not as the king4428 of Egypt4714 commanded1696 them, but saved2421 the men children3206 alive2421. 18 And the king4428 of Egypt4714 called7121 for the midwives3205, and said559 unto them, Why4069 have ye done6213 this thing1697, and have saved2421 the men children3206 alive2421? 19 And the midwives3205 said559 unto Pharaoh6547, Because the Hebrew5680 women802 are not as the Egyptian women4713; for they are lively2422, and are delivered3205 ere2962 the midwives3205 come in935 unto them. 20 Therefore God430 dealt well3190 with the midwives3205: and the people5971 multiplied7235, and waxed very3966 mighty6105. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives3205 feared3372 God430, that he made6213 them houses1004. 22 And Pharaoh6547 charged6680 all his people5971, saying559, Every son1121 that is born3209 ye shall cast7993 into the river2975, and every daughter1323 ye shall save alive2421.
