1 For all this I considered5414 in my heart3820 even to declare952 all this, that the righteous6662, and the wise2450, and their works5652, are in the hand3027 of God430: no man120 knoweth3045 either1571 love160 or hatred8135 by all that is before6440 them.¹ 2 All things come alike to all: there is one259 event4745 to the righteous6662, and to the wicked7563; to the good2896 and to the clean2889, and to the unclean2931; to him that sacrificeth2076, and to him that834 sacrificeth2076 not: as is the good2896, so is the sinner2398; and he that sweareth7650, as he that feareth3373 an oath7621. 3 This is an evil7451 among all things that are done6213 under the sun8121, that there is one259 event4745 unto all: yea, also the heart3820 of the sons1121 of men120 is full4390 of evil7451, and madness1947 is in their heart3824 while they live2416, and after310 that they go to the dead4191.

4 For4310 to him that is3426 joined2266 977 to all the living2416 there is hope986: for a living2416 dog3611 is better2896 than a dead4191 lion738. 5 For the living2416 know3045 that they shall die4191: but the dead4191 know3045 not any thing3972, neither have they any more a reward7939; for the memory2143 of them is forgotten7911. 6 Also their love160, and their hatred8135, and their envy7068, is now3528 perished6; neither have they any more a portion2506 for ever5769 in any thing that is done6213 under the sun8121. 7 Go thy way3212, eat398 thy bread3899 with joy8057, and drink8354 thy wine3196 with a merry2896 heart3820; for God430 now3528 accepteth7521 thy works4639. 8 Let thy garments899 be always6256 white3836; and let thy head7218 lack2637 no ointment8081. 9 Live2416 joyfully7200 with the wife802 whom thou lovest157 all the days3117 of the life2416 of thy vanity1892, which he hath given5414 thee under the sun8121, all the days3117 of thy vanity1892: for that is thy portion2506 in this life2416, and in thy labour5999 which thou takest6001 under the sun8121.² 10 Whatsoever thy hand3027 findeth4672 to do6213, do6213 it with thy might3581; for there is no work4639, nor device2808, nor knowledge1847, nor wisdom2451, in the grave7585, whither thou goest1980.

11 I returned7725, and saw7200 under the sun8121, that the race4793 is not to the swift7031, nor the battle4421 to the strong1368, neither yet bread3899 to the wise2450, nor yet riches6239 to men of understanding995, nor yet favour2580 to men of skill3045; but time6256 and chance6294 happeneth7136 to them all. 12 For man120 also knoweth3045 not his time6256: as the fishes1709 that are taken270 in an evil7451 net4685, and as the birds6833 that are caught270 in the snare6341; so1992 are the sons1121 of men120 snared3369 in an evil7451 time6256, when it falleth5307 suddenly6597 upon them.

13 This2090 wisdom2451 have I seen7200 also under the sun8121, and it seemed great1419 unto me: 14 There was a little6996 city5892, and few4592 men582 within it; and there came935 a great1419 king4428 against it, and besieged5437 it, and built1129 great1419 bulwarks4685 against it: 15 Now there was found4672 in it a poor4542 wise2450 man376, and he by his wisdom2451 delivered4422 the city5892; yet no man120 remembered2142 that same poor4542 man376. 16 Then said559 I, Wisdom2451 is better2896 than strength1369: nevertheless the poor man's4542 wisdom2451 is despised959, and his words1697 are not heard8085. 17 The words1697 of wise2450 men are heard8085 in quiet5183 more than the cry2201 of him that ruleth4910 among fools3684. 18 Wisdom2451 is better2896 than weapons3627 of war7128: but one259 sinner2398 destroyeth6 much7235 good2896.
