1 There is3426 an evil7451 which I have seen7200 under the sun8121, and it is common7227 among men120: 2 A man376 to whom God430 hath given5414 riches6239, wealth5233, and honour3519, so that he wanteth2638 nothing for his soul5315 of all that he desireth183, yet God430 giveth him not power7980 to eat398 thereof, but a stranger376 5237 eateth398 it: this is vanity1892, and it is an evil7451 disease2483. 3 If a man376 beget3205 an hundred3967 children, and live2421 many7227 years8141, so that the days3117 of his years8141 be many7227, and his soul5315 be not filled7646 with good2896, and also that he have no burial6900; I say559, that an untimely birth5309 is better2896 than he. 4 For he cometh935 in with vanity1892, and departeth3212 in darkness2822, and his name8034 shall be covered3680 with darkness2822. 5 Moreover he hath not seen7200 the sun8121, nor known3045 any thing: this2088 hath more rest5183 than2088 the other. 6 Yea, though432 he live2421 a thousand505 years8141 twice6471 told, yet hath he seen7200 no good2896: do not all go1980 to one259 place4725?

7 All the labour5999 of man120 is for his mouth6310, and yet the appetite5315 is not filled4390.¹ 8 For what hath the wise2450 more3148 than the fool3684? what hath the poor6041, that knoweth3045 to walk1980 before the living2416? 9 Better2896 is the sight4758 of the eyes5869 than the wandering1980 of the desire5315: this is also vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit7307.² 10 That which hath been is named7121 8034 already3528, and it is known3045 that it is man120: neither may3201 he contend1777 with him that is mightier8623 than he.

11 Seeing there be3426 many7235 things1697 that increase7235 vanity1892, what is man120 the better3148? 12 For who knoweth3045 what is good2896 for man120 in this life2416, all4557 the days3117 of his vain1892 life2416 which he spendeth6213 as a shadow6738? for who can tell5046 a man120 what shall be after310 him under the sun8121?³
