1 Then Moab4124 rebelled6586 against Israel3478 after310 the death4194 of Ahab256. 2 And Ahaziah274 fell down5307 through a lattice7639 in his upper chamber5944 that was in Samaria8111, and was sick2470: and he sent7971 messengers4397, and said559 unto them, Go3212, enquire1875 of Baalzebub1176 the god430 of Ekron6138 whether I shall recover2421 of this disease2483. 3 But the angel4397 of the LORD3068 said1696 to Elijah452 the Tishbite8664, Arise6965, go up5927 to meet7125 the messengers4397 of the king4428 of Samaria8111, and say1696 unto them, Is it not because there is not a God430 in Israel3478, that ye go1980 to enquire1875 of Baalzebub1176 the god430 of Ekron6138? 4 Now therefore thus saith559 the LORD3068, Thou shalt not come down3381 from that bed4296 on which thou art gone up5927, but shalt surely4191 die4191. And Elijah452 departed3212.¹ 5 And when the messengers4397 turned back7725 unto him, he said559 unto them, Why are ye now2088 turned back7725? 6 And they said559 unto him, There came5927 a man376 up5927 to meet7125 us, and said559 unto us, Go3212, turn again7725 unto the king4428 that sent7971 you, and say1696 unto him, Thus saith559 the LORD3068, Is it not because there is not a God430 in Israel3478, that thou sendest7971 to enquire1875 of Baalzebub1176 the god430 of Ekron6138? therefore thou shalt not come down3381 from that bed4296 on which thou art gone up5927, but shalt surely4191 die4191. 7 And he said1696 unto them, What manner4941 of man376 was he which came up5927 to meet7125 you, and told1696 you these words1697?² 8 And they answered559 him, He was an hairy8181 man1167 376, and girt247 with a girdle232 of leather5785 about his loins4975. 9 Then the king4428 sent7971 unto him a captain8269 of fifty2572 with his fifty2572. And he went up5927 to him: and, behold, he sat3427 on the top7218 of an hill2022. And he spake1696 unto him, Thou man376 of God430, the king4428 hath said1696, Come down3381. 10 And Elijah452 answered6030 and said1696 to the captain8269 of fifty2572, If I be a man376 of God430, then let fire784 come down3381 from heaven8064, and consume398 thee and thy fifty2572. And there came down3381 fire784 from heaven8064, and consumed398 him and his fifty2572. 11 Again7725 also he sent7971 unto him another312 captain8269 of fifty2572 with his fifty2572. And he answered6030 and said1696 unto him, O man376 of God430, thus hath the king4428 said559, Come down3381 quickly4120. 12 And Elijah452 answered6030 and said1696 unto them, If I be a man376 of God430, let fire784 come down3381 from heaven8064, and consume398 thee and thy fifty2572. And he arose6965, and went down3381 with him unto the king4428. 16 And he said1696 unto him, Thus saith559 the LORD3068, Forasmuch as thou hast sent7971 messengers4397 to enquire1875 of Baalzebub1176 the god430 of Ekron6138, is it not because there is no God430 in Israel3478 to enquire1875 of his word1697? therefore thou shalt not come down3381 off that bed4296 on which thou art gone up5927, but shalt surely4191 die4191. 17 So he died4191 according to the word1697 of the LORD3068 which Elijah452 had spoken1696.
