1 And Rehoboam7346 went3212 to Shechem7927: for to Shechem7927 were all Israel3478 come935 to make him king4427. 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam3379 the son1121 of Nebat5028, who was in Egypt4714, whither he had fled1272 from the presence6440 of Solomon8010 the king4428, heard8085 it, that Jeroboam3379 returned7725 out of Egypt4714. 3 And they sent7971 and called7121 him. So Jeroboam3379 and all Israel3478 came935 and spake1696 to Rehoboam7346, saying559, 4 Thy father1 made our yoke5923 grievous7185: now therefore ease7043 thou somewhat the grievous7186 servitude5656 of thy father1, and his heavy3515 yoke5923 that he put5414 upon us, and we will serve5647 thee. 5 And he said559 unto them, Come again7725 unto me after three7969 days3117. And the people5971 departed3212. 6 And king4428 Rehoboam7346 took counsel3289 with the old2205 men that had stood5975 before6440 Solomon8010 his father1 while he yet lived2416, saying559, What349 counsel give3289 ye me to return7725 answer1697 to this people5971? 7 And they spake1696 unto him, saying559, If thou be kind2896 to this people5971, and please7521 them, and speak1696 good2896 words1697 to them, they will be thy servants5650 for ever3117. 8 But he forsook5800 the counsel6098 which the old men2205 gave3289 him, and took counsel3289 with the young men3206 that were brought up1431 with him, that stood5975 before6440 him. 9 And he said559 unto them, What advice3289 give ye that we may return7725 answer1697 to this people5971, which have spoken1696 to me, saying559, Ease7043 somewhat the yoke5923 that thy father1 did put5414 upon us? 10 And the young men3206 that were brought up1431 with him spake1696 unto him, saying559, Thus shalt thou answer559 the people5971 that spake1696 unto thee, saying559, Thy father1 made3513 our yoke5923 heavy3513, but make thou it somewhat lighter7043 for us; thus shalt thou say559 unto them, My little6995 finger shall be thicker5666 than my father's1 loins4975. 11 For whereas6258 my father1 put6006 a heavy3515 yoke5923 upon you, I will put more3254 to your yoke5923: my father1 chastised3256 you with whips7752, but I will chastise you with scorpions6137.¹

12 So Jeroboam3379 and all the people5971 came935 to Rehoboam7346 on the third7992 day3117, as the king4428 bade1696, saying559, Come again7725 to me on the third7992 day3117. 13 And the king4428 answered6030 them roughly7186; and king4428 Rehoboam7346 forsook5800 the counsel6098 of the old men2205, 14 And answered1696 them after the advice6098 of the young men3206, saying559, My father1 made your yoke5923 heavy3513, but I will add3254 thereto: my father1 chastised3256 you with whips7752, but I will chastise you with scorpions6137. 15 So the king4428 hearkened8085 not unto the people5971: for the cause5252 was of God430, that the LORD3068 might perform6965 his word1697, which he spake1696 by the hand3027 of Ahijah281 the Shilonite7888 to Jeroboam3379 the son1121 of Nebat5028. 16 And when all Israel3478 saw7200 that the king4428 would not hearken8085 unto them, the people5971 answered7725 the king4428, saying559, What portion2506 have we in David1732? and we have none inheritance5159 in the son1121 of Jesse3448: every man376 to your tents168, O Israel3478: and now, David1732, see7200 to thine own house1004. So all Israel3478 went3212 to their tents168. 17 But as for the children1121 of Israel3478 that dwelt3427 in the cities5892 of Judah3063, Rehoboam7346 reigned4427 over them. 18 Then king4428 Rehoboam7346 sent7971 Hadoram1913 that was over the tribute4522; and the children1121 of Israel3478 stoned7275 him with stones68, that he died4191. But king4428 Rehoboam7346 made speed553 to get him up5927 to his chariot4818, to flee5127 to Jerusalem3389.² 19 And Israel3478 rebelled6586 against the house1004 of David1732 unto this day3117.
