1 And the men582 of Kirjathjearim7157 came935, and fetched up5927 the ark727 of the LORD3068, and brought935 it into the house1004 of Abinadab41 in the hill1389, and sanctified6942 Eleazar499 his son1121 to keep8104 the ark727 of the LORD3068. 2 And it came to pass, while3117 the ark727 abode3427 in Kirjathjearim7157, that the time3117 was long7235; for it was twenty6242 years8141: and all the house1004 of Israel3478 lamented5091 after310 the LORD3068.

3 And Samuel8050 spake559 unto all the house1004 of Israel3478, saying559, If ye do return7725 unto the LORD3068 with all your hearts3824, then put away5493 the strange5236 gods430 and Ashtaroth6252 from among8432 you, and prepare3559 your hearts3824 unto the LORD3068, and serve5647 him only: and he will deliver5337 you out of the hand3027 of the Philistines6430. 4 Then the children1121 of Israel3478 did put away5493 Baalim1168 and Ashtaroth6252, and served5647 the LORD3068 only. 5 And Samuel8050 said559, Gather6908 all Israel3478 to Mizpeh4708, and I will pray6419 for you unto the LORD3068. 6 And they gathered together6908 to Mizpeh4709, and drew7579 water4325, and poured it out8210 before6440 the LORD3068, and fasted6684 on that day3117, and said559 there, We have sinned2398 against the LORD3068. And Samuel8050 judged8199 the children1121 of Israel3478 in Mizpeh4708.

7 And when the Philistines6430 heard8085 that the children1121 of Israel3478 were gathered together6908 to Mizpeh4708, the lords5633 of the Philistines6430 went up5927 against Israel3478. And when the children1121 of Israel3478 heard8085 it, they were afraid3372 of6440 the Philistines6430. 8 And the children1121 of Israel3478 said559 to Samuel8050, Cease2790 not to cry2199 unto the LORD3068 our God430 for us, that he will save3467 us out of the hand3027 of the Philistines6430.¹ 9 And Samuel8050 took3947 a259 sucking2461 lamb2924, and offered5927 it for a burnt offering5930 wholly3632 unto the LORD3068: and Samuel8050 cried2199 unto the LORD3068 for Israel3478; and the LORD3068 heard6030 him.² 10 And as Samuel8050 was offering up5927 the burnt offering5930, the Philistines6430 drew near5066 to battle4421 against Israel3478: but the LORD3068 thundered7481 with a great1419 thunder6963 on that day3117 upon the Philistines6430, and discomfited2000 them; and they were smitten5062 before6440 Israel3478. 11 And the men582 of Israel3478 went out3318 of Mizpeh4709, and pursued7291 the Philistines6430, and smote5221 them, until they came under Bethcar1033. 12 Then Samuel8050 took3947 a259 stone68, and set7760 it between Mizpeh4709 and Shen8129, and called7121 the name8034 of it Ebenezer72, saying559, Hitherto hath the LORD3068 helped5826 us.³

13 So the Philistines6430 were subdued3665, and they came935 no more3254 into the coast1366 of Israel3478: and the hand3027 of the LORD3068 was against the Philistines6430 all the days3117 of Samuel8050. 14 And the cities5892 which the Philistines6430 had taken3947 from Israel3478 were restored7725 to Israel3478, from Ekron6138 even unto Gath1661; and the coasts1366 thereof did Israel3478 deliver5337 out of the hands3027 of the Philistines6430. And there was peace7965 between Israel3478 and the Amorites567. 15 And Samuel8050 judged8199 Israel3478 all the days3117 of his life2416. 16 And he went1980 from1767 year8141 to year8141 in circuit5437 to Bethel1008, and Gilgal1537, and Mizpeh4709, and judged8199 Israel3478 in all those places4725.⁴ 17 And his return8666 was to Ramah7414; for there was his house1004; and there he judged8199 Israel3478; and there he built1129 an altar4196 unto the LORD3068.
