2 Wirklich, ihr seid die Leute, und mit euch wird die Weisheit aussterben!

2 No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

3 Auch ich habe Verstand wie ihr; ich stehe nicht hinter euch zurück¹; und wer wüsste nicht dergleichen?

3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?¹²³

4 Ich muss einer sein, der seinem Freund zum Gespött ist, der zu Gott ruft, und er antwortet² ihm; der Gerechte, Vollkommene ist zum Gespött!

7 Aber frage doch das Vieh, und das wird es dich lehren; und die Vögel des Himmels, und sie werden es dir mitteilen;

7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:

8 oder rede zu der Erde, und sie wird es dich lehren; und die Fische des Meeres werden es dir erzählen.

8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 Wer erkännte nicht an diesen allen, dass die Hand des HERRN dies gemacht hat,

9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?

10 in dessen Hand die Seele alles Lebendigen ist und der Geist alles menschlichen Fleisches?

10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.⁴⁵

11 Soll nicht das Ohr die Worte prüfen, wie der Gaumen für sich die Speise kostet?

11 Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?⁶

12 Bei Greisen ist Weisheit, und Einsicht bei hohem Alter.

12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

13 Bei ihm ist Weisheit und Macht, sein ist Rat und Einsicht.

13 With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.⁷

14 Siehe, er reißt nieder, und es wird nicht wieder gebaut; er schließt über jemand zu, und es wird nicht aufgetan.

14 Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.⁸

15 Siehe, er hemmt die Wasser, und sie vertrocknen; und er lässt sie los, und sie kehren das Land um.

15 Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 Bei ihm ist Kraft und vollkommenes Wissen; sein ist der Irrende und der Irreführende.

16 With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 Er führt Räte beraubt⁵ weg, und Richter macht er zu Narren.

17 He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

18 Die Herrschaft der Könige löst er auf und schlingt eine Fessel⁶ um ihre Lenden.

18 He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.

19 Er führt Priester beraubt⁷ weg, und Feststehende stürzt er um.

19 He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.

20 Zuverlässigen⁸ entzieht er die Sprache, und Alten benimmt er das Urteil.

21 Verachtung schüttet er auf Edle, und den Gürtel der Starken macht er schlaff.
