1 Nach diesem war ein Fest der Juden, und JesusJesus ging hinauf nach JerusalemJerusalem.1 After these things was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Es ist aber in JerusalemJerusalem bei dem Schaftor ein Teich, der auf hebräisch BethesdaBethesda zubenamt ist, welcher fünf Säulenhallen hat.2 Now there is in Jerusalem, at the sheepgate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In diesen lag eine Menge Kranker, Blinder, Lahmer, Dürrer, [die auf die Bewegung des Wassers warteten.3 In these lay a multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered, awaiting the moving of the water.
4 Denn zu gewissen ZeitenZeiten stieg ein EngelEngel in den Teich herab und bewegte das Wasser. Wer nun nach der Bewegung des Wassers zuerst hineinstieg, ward gesund, mit welcher KrankheitKrankheit irgend er behaftet war.]4 For an angel descended at a certain season in the pool and troubled the water. Whoever therefore first went in after the troubling of the water became well, whatever disease he laboured under.
5 Es war aber ein gewisser MenschMensch daselbst, der achtunddreißig JahreJahre mit seiner KrankheitKrankheit behaftet war.5 But there was a certain man there who had been suffering under his infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 Als JesusJesus diesen daliegen sah und wußte, daß es schon lange ZeitZeit also mit ihm war, spricht er zu ihm: Willst du gesund werden?6 Jesus seeing this man lying there , and knowing that he was in that state now a great length of time, says to him, Wouldest thou become well?
7 Der Kranke antwortete ihm: HerrHerr, ich habe keinen Menschen, daß er mich, wenn das Wasser bewegt worden ist, in den Teich werfe; indem ich aber komme, steigt ein anderer vor mir hinab.7 The infirm man answered him, Sir, I have not a man, in order, when the water has been troubled, to cast me into the pool; but while I am coming another descends before me.
8 JesusJesus spricht zu ihm: Stehe auf, nimm dein BettBett auf und wandle!8 Jesus says to him, Arise, take up thy couch and walk.
9 Und alsbald ward der MenschMensch gesund und nahm sein BettBett auf und wandelte. Es war aber an jenem TageTage Sabbath.9 And immediately the man became well, and took up his couch and walked: and on that day was sabbath.
10 Es sagten nun die Juden zu dem Geheilten: Es ist Sabbath, es ist dir nicht erlaubt, das BettBett zu tragen.10 The Jews therefore said to the healed man , It is sabbath, it is not permitted thee to take up thy couch.
11 Er antwortete ihnen: Der mich gesund machte, der sagte zu mir: Nimm dein BettBett auf und wandle.11 He answered them, He that made me well, he said to me, Take up thy couch and walk.
12 [Da] fragten sie ihn: Wer ist der MenschMensch, der zu dir sagte: Nimm [dein BettBett] auf und wandle?12 They asked him therefore , Who is the man who said to thee, Take up thy couch and walk?
13 Der Geheilte aber wußte nicht, wer es sei; denn JesusJesus war entwichen, weil eine Volksmenge an dem Orte war.13 But he that had been healed knew not who it was, for Jesus had slidden away, there being a crowd in the place.
14 Danach findet JesusJesus ihn im TempelTempel, und er sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du bist gesund geworden; sündige nicht mehr, auf daß dir nichts Ärgeres widerfahre.14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art become well: sin no more, that something worse do not happen to thee.
15 Der MenschMensch ging hin und verkündete den Juden, daß es JesusJesus sei, der ihn gesund gemacht habe.15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 Und darum verfolgten die Juden Jesum [und suchten ihn zu töten], weil er dies am Sabbath tat.16 And for this the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him , because he had done these things on sabbath.
17 JesusJesus aber antwortete ihnen: Mein VaterVater wirkt bis jetzt, und ich wirke.17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto and I work.
18 Darum nun suchten die Juden noch mehr, ihn zu töten, weil er nicht allein den Sabbath brach, sondern auch GottGott seinen eigenen VaterVater nannte, sich selbst GottGott gleich machend.18 For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only violated the sabbath, but also said that God was his own Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Da antwortete JesusJesus und sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der SohnDer Sohn kann nichts von sich selbst tun, außer was er den VaterVater tun sieht; denn was irgend er tut, das tut auch der Sohnder Sohn gleicherweise.19 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing of himself save whatever he sees the Father doing: for whatever things he does, these things also the Son does in like manner.
20 Denn der VaterVater hat den SohnSohn lieb und zeigt ihm alles, was er selbst tut; und er wird ihm größere WerkeWerke als diese zeigen, auf daß ihr euch verwundert.20 For the Father loves the Son and shews him all things which he himself does; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may wonder.
21 Denn gleichwie der VaterVater die Toten auferweckt und lebendig macht, also macht auch der SohnSohn lebendig, welche er will.21 For even as the Father raises the dead and quickens them , thus the Son also quickens whom he will:
22 Denn der VaterVater richtet auch niemand, sondern das ganze GerichtGericht hat er dem SohneSohne gegeben,22 for neither does the Father judge any one, but has given all judgment to the Son;
23 auf daß alle den SohnSohn ehren, wie sie den VaterVater ehren. Wer den SohnSohn nicht ehrt, ehrt den VaterVater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat.23 that all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He who honours not the Son, honours not the Father who has sent him.
24 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer mein WortWort hört und glaubt dem, der mich gesandt hat, hat ewiges LebenLeben und kommt nicht ins GerichtGericht, sondern er ist aus dem TodeTode in das LebenLeben übergegangen.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that he that hears my word, and believes him that has sent me, has life eternal, and does not come into judgment, but is passed out of death into life.
25 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, daß die1 StundeStunde kommt und jetzt ist, da die Toten die Stimme des SohnesSohnes GottesGottes hören werden, und die sie gehört haben, werden leben.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that have heard shall live.
26 Denn gleichwie der VaterVater LebenLeben in sich selbst hat, also hat er auch dem SohneSohne gegeben, LebenLeben zu haben in sich selbst;26 For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son also to have life in himself,
27 und er hat ihm GewaltGewalt gegeben, [auch] GerichtGericht zu halten, weil er des Menschen SohnSohn ist.27 and has given him authority to execute judgment also , because he is Son of man.
28 Wundert euch darüber nicht, denn es kommt die2 StundeStunde, in welcher alle, die in den Gräbern sind, seine Stimme hören,28 Wonder not at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice,
29 und hervorkommen werden: die das Gute getan haben, zur AuferstehungAuferstehung des LebensLebens, die aber das Böse3 verübt haben, zur AuferstehungAuferstehung des GerichtsGerichts.29 and shall go forth; those that have practised good, to resurrection of life, and those that have done evil, to resurrection of judgment.
30 Ich kann nichts von mir selbst tun; so wie ich höre, richte ich, und mein GerichtGericht ist gerecht, denn ich suche nicht meinen Willen, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.30 I cannot do anything of myself; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my will, but the will of him that has sent me.
31 Wenn ich von mir4 selbst zeuge, so ist mein ZeugnisZeugnis nicht wahr.31 If I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is not true.
32 Ein anderer ist es, der von mir zeugt, und ich weiß, daß das ZeugnisZeugnis wahr ist, welches er von mir zeugt.32 It is another who bears witness concerning me, and I know that the witness which he bears concerning me is true.
33 Ihr habt zu JohannesJohannes gesandt, und er hat der WahrheitWahrheit ZeugnisZeugnis gegeben.33 Ye have sent unto John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
34 Ich aber nehme nicht ZeugnisZeugnis von5 einem Menschen, sondern dies sage ich, auf daß ihr errettet werdet.34 But I do not receive witness from man, but I say this that ye might be saved.
35 Jener war die brennende und scheinende LampeLampe; ihr aber wolltet für eine ZeitZeit in seinem6 LichteLichte fröhlich sein.35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36 Ich aber habe das ZeugnisZeugnis, das größer ist als das des JohannesJohannes; denn die WerkeWerke, welche der VaterVater mir gegeben hat, auf daß ich sie vollbringe, die WerkeWerke selbst, die ich tue, zeugenzeugen von mir, daß der VaterVater mich gesandt hat.36 But I have the witness that is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me that I should complete them, the works themselves which I do, bear witness concerning me that the Father has sent me.
37 Und der VaterVater, der mich gesandt hat, er selbst hat ZeugnisZeugnis von mir gegeben. Ihr habt weder jemals seine Stimme gehört, noch seine GestaltGestalt gesehen,37 And the Father who has sent me himself has borne witness concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor have seen his shape,
38 und sein WortWort habt ihr nicht bleibend in euch; denn welchen er gesandt hat, diesem glaubet ihr nicht.38 and ye have not his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, him ye do not believe.
39 Ihr erforschet die SchriftenSchriften7, denn ihr meinet, in ihnen ewiges LebenLeben zu haben, und sie sind es, die von mir zeugenzeugen;39 Ye search the scriptures, for ye think that in them ye have life eternal, and they it is which bear witness concerning me;
40 und ihr wollt nicht zu mir kommen, auf daß ihr LebenLeben habet.40 and ye will not come to me that ye might have life.
41 Ich nehme nicht Ehre von Menschen;41 I do not receive glory from men,
42 sondern ich kenne euch, daß ihr die Liebe GottesGottes nicht in euch habt.42 but I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 Ich bin in dem NamenNamen meines VatersVaters gekommen, und ihr nehmet mich nicht auf; wenn ein anderer in seinem eigenen NamenNamen kommt, den werdet ihr aufnehmen.43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 Wie könnt ihr glauben, die ihr Ehre voneinander nehmet und die Ehre, welche von GottGott allein8 ist, nicht suchet?44 How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and seek not the glory which comes from God alone?
45 Wähnet nicht, daß ich euch bei dem VaterVater verklagen werde; da ist einer, der euch verklagt, MosesMoses, auf den ihr eure HoffnungHoffnung gesetzt habt.45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one who accuses you, Moses, on whom ye trust;
46 Denn wenn ihr MosesMoses glaubtet, so würdet ihr mir glauben, denn er hat von mir geschrieben.46 for if ye had believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me.
47 Wenn ihr aber seinen SchriftenSchriften nicht glaubet, wie werdet ihr meinen Worten glauben?47 But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
