1 Siehe, eines jeden Hoffnung wird betrogen: wird man nicht schon bei seinem Anblick niedergeworfen?

1 Wilt thou draw out the leviathan with the hook, and press down his tongue with a cord?

2 Niemand ist so kühn, daß er ihn aufreize. - Und wer ist es, der sich vor mein Angesicht stellen dürfte?

3 Wer hat mir zuvor gegeben? und ich werde ihm vergelten. Was unter dem ganzen Himmel ist, ist mein.

2 Wilt thou put a rush-rope into his nose, and pierce his jaw with a spike?

4 Nicht schweigen will ich von seinen Gliedern und von seiner Kraftfülle¹ und von der Schönheit seines Baues.

3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? or will he speak softly unto thee?

5 Wer deckte die Oberfläche seines Gewandes auf? In sein Doppelgebiß, wer dringt da hinein?

10 None is so bold as to stir him up; and who is he that will stand before me?

12 Aus seinen Nüstern fährt Rauch, wie aus einem siedenden Topfe und Kessel⁴.
