1 Und die HungersnotHungersnot war schwer im Lande.1 And the famine was grievous in the land.
2 Und es geschah, als sie das Getreide aufgezehrt hatten, das sie aus Ägypten gebracht, da sprach ihr VaterVater zu ihnen: Ziehet wiederum hin, kaufet uns ein wenig Speise.2 And it came to pass, when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, Go again, buy us a little food.
3 Und JudaJuda sprach zu ihm und sagte: Der MannMann hat uns ernstlich bezeugt und gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, es sei denn euer BruderBruder bei euch.3 And Judah spoke to him, saying, The man did positively testify to us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, unless your brother be with you.
4 Wenn du unseren BruderBruder mit uns senden willst, so wollen wir hinabziehen und dir Speise kaufen;4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;
5 wenn du ihn aber nicht sendest, so werden wir nicht hinabziehen; denn der MannMann hat zu uns gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, es sei denn euer BruderBruder bei euch.5 but if thou do not send him , we will not go down, for the man said to us, Ye shall not see my face, unless your brother be with you.
6 Da sprach IsraelIsrael: Warum habt ihr mir das LeidLeid angetan, dem ManneManne kundzutun, daß ihr noch einen BruderBruder habt?6 And Israel said, Why did ye deal so ill with me as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
7 Und sie sprachen: Der MannMann erkundigte sich genau nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft und sprach: Lebt euer VaterVater noch? Habt ihr noch einen BruderBruder? und wir taten es ihm kund nach diesen Worten. Konnten wir denn wissen, daß er sagen würde: Bringet euren BruderBruder herab?7 And they said, The man asked very closely after us, and after our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye a brother? And we told him according to the tenor of these words. Could we at all know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
8 Und JudaJuda sprach zu IsraelIsrael, seinem VaterVater: Sende den Knaben mit mir, und wir wollen uns aufmachen und ziehen, daß wir leben und nicht sterben, sowohl wir als du, als auch unsere Kinder1.8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we and thou and our little ones.
9 Ich will BürgeBürge für ihn sein, von meiner Hand sollst du ihn fordern; wenn ich ihn nicht zu dir bringe und ihn vor dein Angesicht stelle, so will ich alle TageTage gegen dich gesündigt haben;9 I will be surety for him: of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not to thee, and set him before thy face, then shall I be guilty toward thee for ever.
10 denn hätten wir nicht gezögert, gewiß, wir wären jetzt schon zweimal zurückgekehrt.10 For had we not lingered, we should now certainly have returned already twice.
11 Und IsraelIsrael, ihr VaterVater, sprach zu ihnen: Wenn es denn also ist, so tut dieses: Nehmet von dem Besten2 des Landes in eure Gefäße und bringet dem ManneManne ein Geschenk hinab: ein wenig BalsamBalsam und ein wenig Traubenhonig, Tragant und LadanumLadanum, Pistazien und Mandeln.11 And their father Israel said to them, If it is then so, do this: take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a gift: a little balsam and a little honey, tragacanth and ladanum, pistacia-nuts and almonds.
12 Und nehmet doppeltes GeldGeld in eure Hand, und bringet das GeldGeld, das euch oben in euren Säcken wieder geworden ist, in eurer Hand zurück; vielleicht ist es ein Irrtum.12 And take other money in your hand, and the money that was returned to you in the mouth of your sacks, carry back in your hand: perhaps it is an oversight.
13 Und nehmet euren BruderBruder und machet euch auf, kehret zu dem ManneManne zurück.13 And take your brother, and arise, go again to the man.
14 Und Gott3, der AllmächtigeAllmächtige, gebe euch BarmherzigkeitBarmherzigkeit vor dem ManneManne, daß er euch euren anderen BruderBruder und BenjaminBenjamin loslasse. Und ich, wenn ich der KinderKinder beraubt bin, so bin ich der KinderKinder beraubt!14 And the Almighty *God give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother and Benjamin! And I, if I be bereaved of children, am bereaved.
15 Da nahmen die Männer dieses Geschenk und nahmen doppeltes GeldGeld in ihre Hand und BenjaminBenjamin, und machten sich auf und zogen nach Ägypten hinab. Und sie traten vor JosephJoseph.15 And the men took that gift, and took double money in their hand, and Benjamin, and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and came before Joseph.
16 Und als JosephJoseph den BenjaminBenjamin bei ihnen sah, sprach er zu dem, der über sein HausHaus war: Führe die Männer ins HausHaus und schlachte Schlachtvieh und richte zu; denn die Männer sollen mit mir zu Mittag essen.16 And Joseph saw Benjamin with them, and said to the man who was over his house, Bring the men into the house, and slaughter cattle, and make ready; for the men shall eat with me at noon.
17 Und der MannMann tat, wie JosephJoseph gesagt hatte; und der MannMann führte die Männer in das HausHaus JosephsJosephs.17 And the man did as Joseph had said; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.
18 Da fürchteten sich die Männer, daß sie in das HausHaus JosephsJosephs geführt wurden, und sprachen: Um des GeldesGeldes willen, das im AnfangAnfang wieder in unsere Säcke gekommen ist, werden wir hineingeführt, daß man über uns herstürze und über uns herfalle und uns zu Knechten nehme, samt unseren Eseln.18 And the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph's house, and said, Because of the money that was returned to us in our sacks at the beginning are we brought in, that he may turn against us, and fall upon us and take us for bondmen, and our asses.
19 Und sie traten zu dem ManneManne, der über das HausHaus JosephsJosephs war, und redeten zu ihm am Eingang des Hauses19 And they came up to the man that was over Joseph's house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,
20 und sprachen: Bitte, mein HerrHerr! wir sind im AnfangAnfang herabgezogen, um Speise zu kaufen.20 and said, Ah! my lord, we came indeed down at the first to buy food.
21 Und es geschah, als wir in die HerbergeHerberge kamen und unsere Säcke öffneten, siehe, da war eines jeden GeldGeld oben in seinem Sacke, unser GeldGeld nach seinem Gewicht; und wir haben es in unserer Hand zurückgebracht.21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money according to its weight; and we have brought it again in our hand.
22 Und anderes GeldGeld haben wir in unserer Hand herabgebracht, um Speise zu kaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer unser GeldGeld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat.22 And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.
23 Und er sprach: FriedeFriede euch! Fürchtet euch nicht! Euer GottGott und der GottGott eures VatersVaters hat euch einen SchatzSchatz in eure Säcke gegeben; euer GeldGeld ist mir zugekommen. Und er führte SimeonSimeon zu ihnen heraus.23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; your money came to me. And he brought Simeon out to them.
24 Und der MannMann führte die Männer in das HausHaus JosephsJosephs und gab ihnen Wasser, und sie wuschen ihre Füße; und er gab ihren Eseln Futter.24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses food.
25 Und sie bereiteten das Geschenk zu, bis JosephJoseph am Mittag kam; denn sie hatten gehört, daß sie daselbst essen sollten.25 And they made ready the gift for Joseph's coming at noon; for they had heard that they should eat bread there.
26 Als JosephJoseph nach HauseHause kam, da brachten sie ihm das Geschenk, das in ihrer Hand war, ins HausHaus und beugten sich vor ihm nieder zur ErdeErde.26 When Joseph came home, they brought him the gift that was in their hand, into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
27 Und er fragte nach ihrem Wohlergehen und sprach: Geht es eurem VaterVater wohl, dem Greise, von dem ihr sprachet? Lebt er noch?27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well--the old man of whom ye spoke? Is he yet alive?
28 Da sprachen sie: Es geht deinem KnechteKnechte, unserem VaterVater, wohl; er lebt noch. Und sie verneigten sich und beugten sich nieder.28 And they said, Thy servant our father is well; he is yet alive. And they bowed, and made obeisance.
29 Und er erhob seine AugenAugen und sah seinen BruderBruder BenjaminBenjamin, den SohnSohn seiner MutterMutter, und sprach: Ist das euer jüngster BruderBruder, von dem ihr zu mir sprachet? Und er sprach: GottGott sei dir gnädig, mein SohnSohn!29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother of whom ye spoke to me? And he said, God be gracious to thee, my son!
30 Und JosephJoseph eilte (denn sein InnerstesInnerstes wurde erregt über seinen BruderBruder) und suchte einen Ort4, um zu weinen, und er ging in das innere Gemach und weinte daselbst.30 And Joseph made haste, for his bowels burned for his brother; and he sought a place to weep, and he went into the chamber, and wept there.
31 Und er wusch sein Angesicht und kam heraus und bezwang sich und sprach: Traget Speise auf!31 And he washed his face, and came out, and controlled himself, and said, Set on bread.
32 Und man trug für ihn besonders auf, und für sie besonders, und für die Ägypter, die mit ihm aßen, besonders; denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht mit den HebräernHebräern essen, denn das ist den Ägyptern ein Greuel.32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
33 Und sie saßen vor ihm, der Erstgeborene nach seiner ErstgeburtErstgeburt, und der Jüngste nach seiner Jugend; und die Männer sahen einander staunend an.33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marvelled one at another.
34 Und man trug Ehrengerichte5 von ihm zu ihnen; und das Ehrengericht BenjaminsBenjamins war fünfmal größer als die Ehrengerichte von ihnen allen. Und sie tranken und tranken sich fröhlich mit ihm.34 And he had portions carried to them from before him. And Benjamin's portion was five times greater than the portions of them all. And they drank, and made merry with him.
